At Pride N'Joy, denim is not just material, it’s part of a rich history and culture we continue to honor today. One of the clearest expressions of our commitment to quality and craftsmanship is our use of selvedge denim in select collections.
Selvedge denim refers to denim fabric with a “self-finished” edge that is created directly from the weaving process. The term “selvedge” comes from “self-edge,” meaning the fabric edges are clean and durable without needing an overlock stitch to prevent fraying. This signature edge is often revealed when you cuff your jeans, a badge of pride for denim enthusiasts worldwide.
Unlike modern denim made on high-speed projectile looms, selvedge denim is woven on traditional shuttle looms. These looms use a wooden shuttle that moves back and forth to weave the fabric, producing narrow rolls (about 70-80 cm wide) with distinctive self-finished edges.
This is a slow and meticulous process, generating only around 100 meters of fabric per day. But that’s where the beauty lies, each meter is a result of careful craftsmanship that no modern machinery can replicate.
Because shuttle looms work manually, the tension of the threads varies throughout the process. This results in a fabric texture that is rich in irregularities more “alive” and unique in every pair of jeans. Over time, this denim will develop personal and deeper fades, telling the story of the wearer’s lifestyle.
Each selvedge denim carries its own story along the edge. Back in the day, mills used different colored selvedge IDs to identify the brands they were weaving for. Levi’s became known for its red selvedge, Lee for its green, and Wrangler for its yellow/gold. At Pride N'Joy, we also have our own signature detailing embedded into our denim.
Wearing selvedge denim is not just about looks; it’s part of what we call the “denim culture.” True denim heads often pair their selvedge jeans with heritage pieces like Goodyear welted boots, wool fisherman coats, or loopwheeled tees, symbols of a deep appreciation for craftsmanship and garments built to last beyond trends.
Selvedge denim is typically made from 100% high-quality cotton and often worn in raw (dry) form. This means the fabric hasn’t been pre-washed in a factory, making it stiffer and more durable at first. Over time, it softens and molds to your body, creating creases and fades that reflect your personal journey.
Thanks to its superior durability, selvedge denim is also more sustainable. You don’t need to replace it as often, and most denim heads wash their jeans less frequently to achieve those coveted high-contrast fades. The result? Less waste, less water consumption, and a lighter footprint on the planet.
Every selvedge denim piece from Pride N'Joy is crafted with care, dedication, and a deep respect for traditional techniques. We want you to experience denim that not only looks great but also carries a story in every thread and stitch.
So, when you cuff your Pride N'Joy jeans and see that iconic selvedge line, remember, you’re carrying a piece of denim’s rich legacy into your modern life.
